Lorena was a typical 30-year-old mother who found small pleasures in buying used things at affordable prices. This saved her some money from her monthly budget. “But what if they aren’t? We need to take them to a jeweler to have them checked out!”

“They’d accuse us, Henry!”

“Who cares? Think of the money if it’s real!” Henry didn’t want to listen to his wife. He forced Lorena to accompany her to the jewelry store and it turned out that she was wrong.

“Well, they’re real diamonds,” the jeweler said as she examined them.

“What about the price?” Henry asked excitedly.

“Well, we’re looking at something worth thousands of dollars.”

Harry’s eyes lit up. “THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS?!”

“$30,000, sir,” the jeweler said, smiling, “and that’s a minimum. It has a unique design, with intricate cuts, and let’s not forget the natural pearls inside.”

Lorena and Henry couldn’t believe what they were hearing! As they walked out of the store, Henry recommended that they sell them and buy a new car. But Lorena had something else in mind.

“I’m going to give it back to the guy who sold me the couch, Henry.”

“What? Are you crazy? Think of the brighter future that awaits us! You can’t be that stupid!”

“Well,” she glared at him as she snatched the earrings from his hands. “I don’t want to live a better life at the expense of others. So I’m giving them back!”

Henry was not pleased with Lorena’s decision, but she did not care. She returned to the market to look for the old man, but he was nowhere to be seen. She asked some of the other vendors if they knew who he was, but no one knew him.

“Thanks for bringing them back, but you know what? They’re yours now. Keep them! I think they’ve finally found a new owner.”

“No, sir. I can’t keep them. They’re really valuable, and they belong to your wife.”

“Please, I insist.”

Lorena didn’t want to accept the earrings, but the man kept insisting, so she gave in. That night at home, she told Henry about it, adding that the seller lived alone in an old house. He had no one to look after him.

Henry felt horrible for his selfish behavior and apologized to his wife. The next day, they visited the older man to thank him and make him an offer.
